Ten years ago, the starship Valiant crash-landed on Pern, and changed the course of the planet forever.

From the wreckage emerged an unfamiliar sapient species, creatures strange to Pernese eyes. They called themselves the Elohim, and pleaded for sanctuary. A terrible enemy had pursued them across space: an intelligent virus called the Raze, which did not kill its victims but merely stole their bodies and their memories. Driven by the memories of infected engineers and pilots, the Raze had commandeered their ships and converted their homeworld into a plague zone. In a last-ditch frantic effort, they loaded up a colony ship with the last of the uninfected and set out to find a new home.

The Pernese accepted their new visitors only reluctantly. But when a Raze ship crashed near Honshu, and the virus began to spread across Pern, it was the Elohim who engineered the weapon that would save the planet: Dynes, a new dragonkin species immune to Raze infection. They cleansed the Southern Continent with fire and courage and sacrifice. While Honshu was lost, other Weyrs and Weyrholds survived, and rebuilt better than ever with the help of alien technology.

It has been five turns since the last confirmed Raze infection, and the virus is believed to be fully eradicated from Pern. The Southern Continent rebuilds, while the North isolates itself. Monaco Bay Weyrhold extended a hand of friendship to the newly named Valiant Weyr, and for the first time humans and Elohim mingle freely.
